About the game

A minimalist top-down arcade driving game where the fastest way to win is to follow the rules of the road.

Most driving games reward you for going fast. MOW rewards you for driving well. Brake at crossings, respect speed limits, watch for pedestrians and read the signs. Break the rules and you lose points from your driving licence, and when the points run out, it's game over.

You start relaxed. You end up sweating. The first worlds are fluid, almost meditative, with music crafted level by level. Then the game changes face: cliffs, floods and landslides, with no margin for error.

MOW is built entirely from road signs and asphalt markings. It's a tense, clean arcade game about discipline at the wheel.

Features

  • Traffic laws are real. Red lights, speed limits, zebra and level crossings, pedestrians. Driving carefully is how you get through each level.
  • A driving licence instead of lives. Every infraction costs you a licence point. No points, game over.
  • Your car breaks. For real. No health bar: every hit degrades the brakes, the speed or the steering. A badly damaged car can be finished off by a single bush.
  • Perfection has its reward. Finish a level without infractions to earn a Perfect and an extra licence point. Complete a whole world in Perfect to unlock bonus levels, including a retro-polygonal tribute to Asteroids.
  • A slot machine between levels. Spend the coins you collect on the road and take what comes up: repairs, fuel, licence points or rocket mode. No microtransactions.
  • Minimalist visual style. Icon-based menus and almost no text, so the game reads at a glance in any language.

Almost a decade on the road

MOW started with a simple question: what if a driving game made obeying the traffic rules the winning strategy, instead of speed? The answer became a tense, fast arcade game where braking at the right moment matters more than flooring it.

It was first released on mobile (iOS and Android) in 2017 by Zeus Software. That year it was a finalist for Best Basque Videogame at AZPlay and was selected for the Nordic Game Discovery Contest. Its two creators kept it alive and updated for almost a decade. Over the last year they rebuilt it for PC, adapting it to landscape screens, adding gamepad support and making it available in seven languages, including Basque. The Steam version is the result: the definitive version of a game that has been growing for years.

MOW is catalogued in Tabakalera's archive of Basque video game history.
